Civil engineering researcher’s work creates newer and faster technologies for high-rate systems (text only)

We don’t yet drive hypersonic vehicles, but someday these fast-moving modes of transportation may be one more engineering innovation improved by the work of Iowa State researcher Simon Laflamme. New technologies and algorithms enable quicker decision making for high-rate engineering systems that will improve safety mechanisms and performance. For Laflamme, an associate professor in civil …Continue reading “Civil engineering researcher’s work creates newer and faster technologies for high-rate systems (text only)”

Two Cyclone Engineers named Wallace E. Barron All-University Senior Award recipients

Rachael Barnes (’18 bio systems engr & global resources systems) and Alexander Lev (’19 software engr) have been named recipients of the ISU Alumni Association’s Wallace E. Barron All-University Senior Award. The award honors outstanding seniors who display high character, outstanding achievement in academics and university/community activities, and promise for continuing these exemplary qualities as alumni.

Aerospace Engineering’s Marti Steelman honored for 35 years of ISU service

When you walk into the main office of the Department of Aerospace Engineering, the first person you see will probably be Marti Steelman. And don’t worry about asking her that tough question. She’ll probably be able to answer it. Though relatively new to Aerospace Engineering, she’s been around the block a few times at Iowa …Continue reading “Aerospace Engineering’s Marti Steelman honored for 35 years of ISU service”

Engineering a global education

Engineering a global education by Lindsay Moeller As a software engineering major, Willem Paul (’20 software engineering and LCP German) did not expect to also major in German when he started out as a student at Iowa State University. “I came to Iowa State with German credits from high school. I knew I wanted to …Continue reading “Engineering a global education”

New study finds bacterial enzymes could help prevent earthquake damage

A new study published in Canadian Geotechnical Journal suggests that an enzyme derived from bacteria could be used to enhance the stability of certain soils.

ISU ABE alum Rachael Barnes earns Wallace E. Barron All-University Senior Award

Leadership has been Rachel Barnes’ specialty at Iowa State. Through ISU’s Program for Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE), she has served as a student role model, student role model coordinator – a position that reaches more than 7,000 K-12 students every year, leadership studies peer mentor, and residential peer mentor.

Study: requiring landlords to disclose bedbugs cuts infestations, creates long-term savings

Policies requiring landlords to disclose a rental unit’s history with bedbugs may raise costs to landlords over the short-term, but over the long-term they are an effective way to reduce infestations and lower costs, according to a just-published study.
