The sixth annual Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship college-by-college pitch off was just completed this month – with Belling and Meyer placing first in the “New Idea” category, receiving a $5,000 award. The students participating in the pitch-off have to go through several rounds for the potential to win, and pitch their idea in 90 seconds to panels of judges.
For the Fall 2022 semester, four graduate students in the Department of Aerospace Engineering have been honored with Teaching Excellence (TEX) and Research Excellence (REX) Awards from Iowa State University’s graduate college. The awards are presented to graduate students who demonstrate excellence in their scientific research or their teaching performance.
Department of Aerospace Engineering assistant professor Ping He has been named a Michael and Denise Mack 2050 Challenge Scholar. The program was established to support the Iowa State University College of Engineering’s 2050 vision. It supports one junior faculty member with fellowship funding.

Mark Lashier earned a B.S. in chemical engineering at Iowa State University in 1985 and a Ph.D. in 1989. In the years since he has earned respect and recognition as an engineer, business professional and industry leader. The President and Chief Executive Officer of Phillips Petroleum Co. joined the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) Honors and Awards Banquet where he was inducted into the department’s alumni Hall of Fame.
Laura Brooks Maxwell (’89 industrial engineering) is a recipient of a 2022 Professional Citation in Engineering. The PACE award recognizes alumni for significant career accomplishments.
Chris Ellison (’00 chemical engineering) is a 2022 recipient of the Professional Citation in Engineering. The PACE award recognizes alumni for significant career accomplishments.
Samarjit Das (’10 PhD electrical engineering) is the 2022 recipient of Cyclone Engineering’s Young Alumni Award.
Mark Lashier (’85, PhD ’89 chemical engineering) is a 2022 Anson Marston Medal recipient. The Marston Medal is the college’s highest alumni honor.
Max Porter (’65 civil engineering, MS ’68, PhD 74 structural engineering) is a 2022 Anson Marston Medal recipient. The Marston Medal is the college’s highest alumni honor.
One of only twelve awardees at Iowa State University, and housed in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, microbiology student Grace Carey received the $10,000 prestigious Brown Graduate Fellowship. Carey’s path to where she is today, a third-year, successful doctoral student, was a hard-earned path paved with her drive for environmental justice and passion for sustainable agriculture.
Postdocs Jungkuk Lee and Susheel Kumar Nethi of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) have been awarded Postdoctoral Scholar Excellence Awards from the Graduate College of Iowa State University.
The family of Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) undergraduate Paige Myers has been chosen as the Cyclone Family Weekend 2022 Family of the Year. The Myers family will be featured as part of Cyclone Family Weekend October 14-16.
