Engineers, elementary educators and future teachers partner to teach STEM

At Iowa State, integrating engineering into K-12 classrooms is a collaborative effort that spans across campus and into surrounding school districts. Trinect, a program funded by the National Science Foundation STEM-C Partnerships, brings together three groups to introduce engineering concepts to young students: engineering graduate students, preservice teacher students and cooperating elementary teachers from Des Moines Public Schools.

Iowa State’s Program for Women in Science and Engineering celebrates 30 years

Thirty years ago, the Program for Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) was a fraction of what it is today. With initially only two programs – Taking the Road Less Traveled and a summer internship – the program now boasts several K-12 outreach programs, learning communities, study abroad opportunities and so much more.

Iowa State alum wins Modern-Day Technology Leader Award

Derrick Stanley, an industrial and manufacturing systems alum, will receive a Modern-Day Technology Leader Award at the 2016 Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) STEM Conference held Feb. 18-20. The award highlights bright young men and women who are making strides in the STEM field and shaping the future of engineering, science, and technology.

Camille Schroeder recognized for leadership in promoting Women in STEM through K-12 outreach

Each year, the Technology Association of Iowa celebrates and recognizes women who are innovators and leaders in science, technology, engineering and math. Camille Sloan Schroeder, who oversees the College of Engineering’s community outreach programs, was among the finalists for the Women of Innovation Award in the Diversity Champion category.

Dean’s Blog guest post: Why Project Lead the Way makes a difference

Susan Lyons has been teaching middle school and high school for 15 years. She works for Pella Community Schools and is a master teacher for Project Lead the Way (PLTW), a program that introduces middle and high school students to STEM curriculum and hands-on experiences. Iowa State University College of Engineering Community Outreach serves in leadership with Iowa PLTW as the affiliate partner. Throughout Lyons’ career, she has looked for ways to engage students in STEM lessons, and she says PLTW is a great way to do just that.

Iowa State NECA a 2-time Green Energy Challenge Champion, earns Chapter of the Year

Jordan Creek sixth-graders learn Iowa State concrete engineering

Forty-eight sixth-graders from Jordan Creek Elementary School of West Des Moines, Iowa, experienced cement concrete engineering April 30 at the Iowa State University Portland Cement Concrete and Materials Research Laboratory (PCC Laboratory). Students mixed water, cement, and sand in 4-gallon plastic tubs to form concrete mortar.
