A Ram Kim, assistant professor of aerospace engineering, Benjamin Ahn, assistant professor of aerospace engineering, and Matthew Nelson, lecturer in aerospace engineering, received a 2019-2020 Miller Faculty Fellowship grant to develop innovative new approaches to undergraduate student learning.
Iowa State engineers are working with the Iowa Department of Transportation to test heated-pavement technology developed on campus. The test slabs at the Iowa DOT are smarter and more complex than the research group’s previous tests at the Des Moines International Airport. And so far, preliminary tests indicate the system works well – even in this winter’s subzero temperatures.

Shan Jiang, assistant professor of material science and engineering, led a research group that created a novel Janus nanocrystal platform to control nanoparticle self-assembly. Janus particles are fundamental new materials, and Jiang’s discovery opens opportunities in different areas including energy, drug delivery, disease diagnosis and therapy. The results appear on the cover of the March issue of Nano Letters.
