NASA selects three ISU researchers for EPSCoR funding

Department of Aerospace Engineering T.A. Wilson Professor of Aerospace Engineering Ashraf Bastawros is one of three individuals from Iowa State University who have been selected for NASA EPSCoR’s Fiscal Year 2022 Rapid Response Research (R3).

AerE’s Stephen Holland Selected Fellow of American Society for Nondestructive Testing  

Stephen Holland, associate professor of aerospace engineering and associate director of Iowa State’s Center for Nondestructive Evaluation, has been named a Fellow of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) class of 2021. Since joining Iowa State in 2006, Holland has made significant contributions to multiple aerospace and NDE research and teaching innovations.

Study by AerE’s Hu confirms impact of ice on wind turbine blades

Sarkar research helps cables, power lines withstand wind

Department of Aerospace Engineering’s Partha Sarkar and students in his research lab are utilizing the department’s Aerodynamic/Atmospheric Boundary Layer (AABL) wind tunnel in the Wind Simulation and Testing Laboratory (WiST) to study how to prevent cables – such as those that hold up bridges and power lines – from “galloping” in high wind. Cyclone Engineers develop alternative cooling materials

Iowa State University, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory, the University of Maryland, and the Colorado School of Mines collaborated on a paper researching a solid-state alternative that can be used to replace vapor-compression cooling technology, making an environmentally friendly material resistant to wear over time.

Smart morphing façades for adaptive buildings under wind events

A team of researchers led by Iowa State University’s Alice Alipour received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop a solution to decrease the losses associated with buildings under extreme wind events.
