Tom Brumm, Mary and Charles Sukup Global Professor of Food Security, received an AgOnline Teacher of the Year Award, sponsored by Iowa State’s Brenton Center. A gift from Bühler Inc. has established the Bühler Lecturer in Feed Technology position at Iowa State University. After a national search, the inaugural holder of the Bühler Lecturer will be Sam Cook, who has been working since 2016 as a post-harvest engineer and feed technologist in Iowa State’s Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering.

Shan Hu, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering, is developing new catalysts made of rust nanostructures that convert light into fuel faster and cheaper than other leading catalysts. Her research holds the promise of using hydrogen as a sustainable clean energy.

A two-year, $27 million interior gutting and rebuilding of Marston Hall has earned a Gold award in the LEED green building rating system. More than 25 percent of the LEED credits for Marston Hall reward energy efficiency. As designed, natural gas and electricity use is 38 percent lower than state code requirements. Additional achievements are in the acoustical quality of the classrooms and auditorium, and that 89 percent of the construction waste generated during the renovation was recycled, rather than sent to a landfill.
The College of Engineering is home to 52 postdocs, who make valuable contributions to Cyclone engineering research.
“Postdoctoral associates are key members of the College of Engineering’s research efforts,” said Arun Somani, associate dean for research. “Postdocs bring specialized experience and knowledge and offer creative, fresh ideas and approaches to their research groups and serve as role models. They also help teach and mentor graduate and undergraduate students in hands-on experiential engineering experiences.”
