Dean of engineering message regarding campus climate

Dear Engineering Students, Faculty and Staff:

President Wendy Wintersteen recently sent two letters to the campus community condemning racist acts at Iowa State University. A forum was held on Nov.7 with Students Against Racism in which the ISU leadership team outlined 10 actions to help address the campus climate. I want you to know I am strongly supportive of these actions and expect our students, faculty and staff to join me in also condemning racism, white supremacy, anti-Semitism and xenophobia.

Understanding the views of others – whether at Iowa State or beyond our campus – ensures each person has a voice to be heard, the freedom to express that voice and the opportunity to engage peacefully. Let us all commit each day to the Iowa State Principles of Community: respect, purpose, cooperation, richness of diversity, freedom from discrimination, and honest and respectful expression of ideas.

It’s a great honor to serve as your dean – and with this comes my responsibility to make sure we provide a welcoming place to learn, work and excel in our aspirations. If you have any questions about our culture, issues you may have experienced or concerns you want to express, please contact me. I value your input and appreciate your engagement.

If you need to report an incident, you can use the ISU reporting system. For additional support, please access the following campus resources:
