World War II veteran, emeritus faculty member honored with Quilt of Valor

Iowa State emeritus faculty member Richard Montag was awarded a Quilt of Valor on Aug. 12. Montag lives in Colo, Iowa. He was an associate professor of engineering during his time at Iowa State.

According to the article “Colo man awarded Quilt of Valor,” printed in the Aug. 23 edition of the Story County Sun, Montag received the quilt from the Quilt of Valor Foundation in recognition of his service to the United States during the Second World War. Several of Montag’s family members, including his wife, Patty, were at the presentation.

The article goes on to describe Montag’s service record. He first enlisted in the Army in May 1944. During WWII, he was involved in conflicts at Baerenthal, France, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1948, but returned to serve in the reserves during 1951. The article lists several more honors conferred upon Montag, including the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the WWII Army of Occupation Medal.
