Computer engineering senior discusses Internet restrictions

In an Iowa State Daily editorial, computer engineering senior Rick Hanton talks about
legislation presented to congress – the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) and Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) – that would allow governmental agencies to shut down sites that infringe on copyright laws, such as those with illegal copies of music available for download.

After providing background on the proposed bills and studies that demonstrate people do in fact still purchase digital music rather than only listen to pirated versions of songs, he says, “I hope our congress will see the light of reason and vote against PIPA and SOPA, otherwise our creative young generation and our economy will suffer simply to satisfy the whims of multibillion-dollar record and movie studios.”
