Stoplight cameras improve safety, ISU finds

A few years ago, Iowa State studied “The Effectiveness of Iowa’s Automated Red Light Running Enforcement Programs.”

And how effective are they, especially when it comes to reducing accidents?

On Wednesday, the day the Des Moines Police Department called a news conference to say cameras would go live on designated city thoroughfares by the end of the work week, Shauna Hallmark, a university transportation engineer, needed two words to answer the question.

“Very effective,” she said from Ames.

  1. How can they get away with ticketing a car..not a person. Do they send the car to jail? Anyone could be driving my car..numerous authorized family members, a thief, etc.
    Hasn’t anyone challenged this effective but, in my mind, illegal practice?
