On Sept. 30 Iowa State University President Steven Leath installed Terry Wipf, professor and chair of the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering (CCEE), as the inaugural Greenwood Department Chair. Faculty, staff, and department friends attended the medallion ceremony held at Alliant Energy-Lee Liu Auditorium in Howe Hall.

Don (BSCE’76) and Sharon (BSFamEnviro’75) Greenwood have given Iowa State an endowed gift to fund the Greenwood Department Chair of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering. “Within our department alone, Don and Sharon have already invested in people, programs and facilities,” Wipf said. “They have allowed us to meet and advance our significant educational mission.”

President Leath recognized the importance of the Greenwood investment in the department chair position. “The department chair is arguably one of the most difficult positions on our campus,” Leath said. “So this is an especially important medallion ceremony.”

Wipf said that the primary focus of the Greenwood gift will be “an investment in people, since they make the difference, and provide the impact, in our department.” The gift will advance CCEE strategic initiatives already underway as well as new initiatives that faculty, staff and students will help identify to further improve the department’s programs.

Don Greenwood has led Burns & McDonnell’s Construction Services Division since 1994, where has presided over exceptional growth. He also is an Iowa State University Foundation Governor and recipient of the College of Engineering Professional Achievement Citation in Engineering Award. He plans to retire from Burns & McDonnell in December 2015. Sharon Greenwood works in inside sales at Midtec Associates in Lenexa, Kan., and also plans to retire in December 2015.

  1. Congratulations Terry! Very proud to say I grew up a few blocks from the Wipf family in Weeping Water, NE. Played lots of wiffle ball game on the Elliott lot by their house over the years. Terry was one of the best athletes to ever come out of our little town. More than that, Terry was always a great student and has gone on to help many others through the years in the education area at Iowa State. Very proud of you Terry!
