Lightning strike slows Iowa State’s solar car team in Texas competition

Members of Team PrISUm were diligently working on their solar car’s battery system when lightning struck nearby. It was the eve of the May 31-June 5 Formula Sun Grand Prix at the Motorsport Ranch in Cresson, Texas. The team had spent two weeks repairing and upgrading the car’s battery pack and brakes. Shourya Otta receives 2009 Research Excellence Award

Shourya Otta-received the 2009 Spring Research Excellence Award.  His major professor, Dr. Alric Rothmayer, nominated Shourya for this excellence award. The purpose of a Research Excellence Award “is to recognize at the time of their graduation up to 10% of the graduating graduate students for their outstanding research accomplishments as documented in their theses and dissertations.”

Dr. Hui Hu and Jeff Murphy awarded 2009 AIAA Best Paper Award

Dr. Hui Hu has received 2009 AIAA Best Paper Award presented by AIAA Applied Aerodynamics Technical Committee. Hu, an assistant professor in aerospace engineering at Iowa State University, wrote the article with his former graduate student, Jeffrey Murphy, (M.S., summer 2008), who is now working as an aerospace engineer at Boeing, St. Louis.
