Two gripping stories were reported in the Register in the past week about agricultural workers entrapped in grain bins. The story had a happy ending for Arick Baker, 23, of New Providence, who was rescued alive. Brandon Mullen, 30, of Harcourt could not be reached in time, however.
Historic increases in grain prices and production explain the increased numbers of grain bin accidents, of course. But the numbers of entrapments and deaths also tend to rise with the moisture condition of the grain, according to Charles Schwab, an Iowa State University professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering.
