David Jeong, associate professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering at Iowa State University, has received the Construction Industry Institute (CII) 2015 Distinguished Professor Award. He will officially accept the honor at the 2015 CII Annual Conference, held this August in Boston, Mass.
Jeong is honored for consistent efforts and active application of CII-sponsored research findings to the courses he teaches. He has been affiliated with CII since 2007, having served as a principal investigator for research and as a member of the academic committee. He is particularly interested in teaching students about unique characteristics, project management approaches and construction engineering issues in the Engineering, Procurement and Construction sector, also known as EPC, within the construction industry. “This sector handles complex, multibillion-dollar capital projects in which many of our students’ prospective employers thrive,” Jeong says.
He also says that he combines construction management and engineering skills and concepts in the classroom so students are ready for large, complex projects. Jeong demonstrates this in CON E 422 (Construction Cost Estimating and Cost Engineering) and CE 503 (Construction Finance and Business Management). In CON E 422, students learn of the personal traits, knowledge, and skills required for good cost estimating on EPC projects. Jeong also teaches early estimating techniques for EPC projects and cost analysis procedure for industrial modular construction using recent CII findings. In CE 503, Jeong administers the Project Definition Rating Index (PDRI), where students are challenged to rate more than 70 project criteria based on risk and definition. “Practicing managers and engineers use PDRI to decide whether or not capital engineering and construction projects are pursued,” Jeong says.
Jeong joined the CCEE department as associate professor in 2012. For more information on his research and other Iowa State construction engineering and management research, go to http://www.ccee.iastate.edu/research/construction.
