Hanzheng Guo, a PhD student in materials science and engineering, was selected as the winner for the 2015 Zaffarano Prize, the highest research award for an ISU graduate student.
While at Iowa State, Guo worked with Xiaoli Tan, a professor in MSE, on research that focused primarily on lead-free piezoelectric ceramics. Guo is now a postdoctoral associate at the Materials Research Institute at Pennsylvania State University.
With the Zaffarano Prize, Guo will receive a plaque, a year-long membership to Sigma Xi (an honor society for scientific research), and a check for $1,500.
The award was established in 1989 by Dr. Daniel Zaffarano, a former vice president for research at Iowa State, and is given for superior performance in publishable research.
