Hallmark to Lead the Institute for Transportation

Written by Sandy Clarke

Shauna Hallmark has been named director of Iowa State University’s Institute for Transportation.

Hallmark, a professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering at Iowa State, has served as interim director of the institute, also known as InTrans, since August 2012. She has been a transportation engineer in the institute’s Center for Transportation Research and Education since 2000 and has served as associate director of the center.

“The research, education and outreach provided by InTrans are of critical importance to the state of Iowa, the Midwest and beyond,” said Sarah Nusser, vice president for research. “The research and services they provide are in great demand, and I am delighted that the institute will be in the capable hands of Dr. Hallmark.”

Hallmark also directs the Midwest Transportation Consortium, a regional partnership of six universities led by Iowa State. InTrans recently received $5.2 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation to expand the work of the consortium.

Hallmark holds bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in civil engineering from Brigham Young University, Utah State University and the Georgia Institute of Technology, respectively.

She has led research on intelligent transportation systems, transportation safety and air quality. Hallmark has also been asked to evaluate Iowa legislation, such as the use of cameras to enforce red-light violations at traffic signals. Research results from the institute have been used nationally and internationally by law and traffic enforcement organizations.

Hallmark succeeds Shashi Nambisan, who returned to the faculty of the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering through December 2013 before joining the faculty at the University of Tennessee.

The Institute for Transportation is one of the top 10 university-based transportation research programs in the country. The institute and its 15 programs and centers receive federal, state and local sponsorships, including core funding from the Iowa Department of Transportation.
