CCEE grad students host 2nd annual research showcase

Elizabeth Shelman won the 2012 CCEE Graduate Student Research Showcase and Poster Competition held in Town Engineering Building November 29.

The 2nd Annual CCEE Graduate Student Research Showcase and Poster Competition attracted nearly 200 graduate students, faculty, industry representatives, and others November 29 on second floor Town Engineering Building. The event was entirely run by CCEE graduate students.

Thirty-one graduate students presented their latest research posters, positioned in a gallery-like setting on second floor Town Engineering Building hallways and a classroom. Judges for the event included Federal Highway Administration Senior Project Engineer Jim Grove (BSCE’73, MSCE’78), WHKS Structural Engineer Casey Faber (BSCE’08, MSCE’10), and the following faculty from CCEE: Professor Jim Alleman, Assistant Professor Jing Dong ,W. A. Klinger Teaching Professor Charles Jahren, Senior Lecturer Matt Rouse (BSCE’94) and Professor Kejin Wang.

Geotechnical/materials engineering Master’s student Elizabeth Shelman took the poster competition’s first prize ($150) for her presentation on applying a soil-bentonite cutoff wall on a levee to advance flood prevention techniques. Second place winner ($125) was Jiake Zhang on the effects of the interfacial zone (related to freeze and thaw) on joint deteroriation of concrete pavements. Third place winner ($100) was Grant Schmitz on the design of tall wind turbines utilizing ultra-high performance concrete. Many voted People’s Choice to Angel Morandeira and John Mallen for their presentation on training development for pavement preservation.
