Iowa State University’s National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) Student Chapter has been selected as a finalist for the 2012 NECA/ELECTRI International Green Energy Challenge student competition. While scored as the top written plan, the group will present their plan at the NECA Convention September 29 in Las Vegas, Nev.
The Iowa State team will compete with Georgia Institute of Technology, Youngstown State University and the University of Washington for overall winner.
“We couldn’t have done it without the team members and many faculty and staff in their supporting roles,” says Beth Hartmann, Iowa State NECA faculty advisor and a lecturer in the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering.
Hartmann led a group of NECA Student Chapter students who adopted construction, design, marketing, and management techniques to develop a mock energy analysis and retrofit of Hilton Coliseum. Items they considered were the arena’s lighting, air conditioning and heat systems, alternative energy sources, how their plan meets top Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards, and more.
The team will give an oral presentation to a panel of NECA industry leaders at the finals. The chapter will meet with the judges at the NECA Convention and the winner of the 2012 Green Energy Challenge will be determined. Based on the quality of the presentations, the judges will rank the finalist teams in first, second, third, and fourth place positions and assign a “Best Presenter.” Scores on the plan and the oral presentation will be considered for overall winner, which will be announced Sunday, September 30, at the NECA Student Chapter Summit.
