Academics and researchers at Iowa State University have developed a cyber test bed that can simulate all sorts of Internet-based attacks on computer networks, and will soon begin using this test bed to simulate attacks on portions of the national electricity grid.
With the help of $500,000 in seed money from the U.S. Department of Justice, Professor Doug Jacobson has spearheaded an effort to build what is called the Internet-Scale Event and Attack Generation Environment, nicknamed ISEAGE. This array of hardware and software will enable researchers to replicate a wide variety of attack modes – some well understood; others still on the cutting-edge — that will enable them to test cyber defenses erected to safeguard a wide variety of computer-based applications.
