Four Alumni Feted

Four Iowa State University alumni received the Professional Progress in Engineering Award (PPEA) from the College of Engineering at the Marston Club and Patent Dinner on April 16.

Dr. Craig Mahoney, chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, received his BS in industrial engineering from Iowa State in 1991, then decided to pursue medicine. He attended medical school at the University of Iowa, completed his residency at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, and was selected for a prestigious fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

Meiyu Shen, mathematical statistician for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Rockville, Maryland, earned her PhD in chemical engineering from Iowa State in 1999. Shen also studied at Chendu University of Science and Technology in China, where she received her BS and MS in chemical engineering in 1988 and 1990, respectively. The FDA has recognized Shen with two Outstanding Service Awards for her individual accomplishments, three Group Recognition Awards, and one Team Excellence Award.

Sridhar Desikan is currently part of the leadership team for the Bristol-Myers Squibb Biopharmaceutics and Analytical R&D in Bangalore, India. After receiving a BS in chemical engineering in 1991 from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in India and an MS in chemical engineering in 1994 from Bucknell University, Desikan completed his PhD in chemical engineering in 1997 at Iowa State.

Chris Clover, president and CEO of Mechdyne Corporation, holds a BS and MS in aerospace engineering (1991, 1992), an MBA (1994), and a PhD in mechanical engineering (1996) from Iowa State. He worked extensively with Iowa State’s Virtual Reality Applications Center, which led him to found Mechdyne in 1996 as he was completing his doctorate. Mechdyne has grown to become the world’s largest company dedicated to providing large-scale visualization solutions.
