Building awareness of biobased products

Helping shift the United States to an agricultural-based economy has taken a life of its own at Iowa State University Extension’s Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS). Since 2002, students, faculty, and staff have been working to develop the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) BioPreferred program, which was implemented to promote the increased purchase and use of biobased products.

CIRAS assists USDA with new biobased product label program

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is now making it easier for consumers to identify biobased products with the launch of the BioPreferred labeling program. Under the new voluntary program, manufacturers and vendors can, after obtaining certification from USDA, market their certified biobased product using the “USDA Certified Biobased Product” label.
