Engineers help agronomists develop a new test to optimize nitrogen fertilizer inputs

Navreet Mahal, a 4th-year PhD student co-majoring in Soil Science and Sustainable Agriculture, is currently researching corn stalk sap nitrates to evaluate a new test to optimize nitrogen fertilizer inputs. Mahal’s work is part of a collaboration between Iowa State University Agronomy Department and Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (ECpE). ECpE’s Associate Professor Liang Dong’s group has invented new soil and plant nitrate sensors that enable the new plant and soil tests that Mahal is developing. These tools will make testing nitrogen status of soil and plant faster and cheaper.
