The Iowa State University Northern Research and Demonstration Farm has a new manager and a new staff member.
Matt Schnabel has been named superintendent of the farm near Kanawha and Karl Nicolaus has been hired to assist management of the farm. Both are Iowa State alumni.
Schnabel earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural systems technology in 2010. He has worked at the research farm for 1.5 years and succeeds Micah Smidt, the previous superintendent.
Nicolaus graduated this year with a bachelor’s degree in agronomy. He will assist Schnabel with the farm’s 30 research projects.
The research farm is owned by the North Central Iowa Research Association and is leased to ISU for agricultural research and demonstration projects. The farm is the oldest of Iowa State’s research farm network, with projects in crops, soils, water quality, pest management and cover crops.
