Getting stronger: Levees improve after ’93 floods

Ten years after the major flooding of 1993, the city has made protecting businesses, residents and the city’s infrastructure a priority.

Des Moines City Manager Rick Clark says the city has been diligent about the need for flood protection improvements. The Federal Government and the city have spent more than 120 million dollars on flood protection, including pumping stations and a focus on the city’s levees.

David White, professor of construction engineering at Iowa State, says part of the levee problem in 1993 was the soil and how it was compacted.
