Engineering with a purpose

Senior mechanical engineering students at Iowa State University found an ideal capstone project by teaming up with Opportunity Village, a private, non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to serving people with intellectual disabilities.

Five team members this year designed and built a new stand aid walker, to be used by an individual who receives day services at the Village in Clear Lake.

Barb Ewer, QDDP at the Village, said she had heard many years ago that Woodward State Hospital School had worked on a project with ISU. She called Professor Jim Heise and he jumped at the idea. The department collects several mechanical engineering projects to offer seniors, who need to complete a final project for their degree.

Josh Law, Austin Boege, Holden Sorem, John Masinick, and Kah Chan teamed up to work on the stand aid. Law and Boege delivered the device recently, just before their commencement that weekend.
