The Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) celebrated its students, faculty, alumni and industry partners at civil engineering and construction engineering banquets this month. CCEE has had a banner academic year.
On April 12, Chi Epsilon and the civil engineering program honored eight students and two faculty members.
Assistant Professor Jeramy Ashlock earned the Schafer Award for Excellence in Teaching, Research and Service. Lecturer Beth Hartmann was awarded the Joseph C. and Elizabeth A. Anderlik Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.
Graduate student Sean Connor and civil engineering senior Pam Erickson garnered the Hotten “Miller” Elleby Memorial Award in memory of former structural engineering professor Dr. Hotten Elleby. The award recognizes an outstanding civil engineering student who demonstrates a high level of interest in structural engineering and has taken a structural engineering course. Dr. Elleby taught at Iowa State from 1965 until his untimely death in 1977.
Kathleen Maurer and Mitchell Holtzman, both civil engineering seniors, earned the Robert L. Carstens Scholarship in Transportation Engineering. Their merit for the award was based on their membership in both the Transportation Student Association and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) student clubs. Robert L. Carstens (BSCE’43, MSCE’64, PhDCE’66) presented.
Andrew Faust and Sheila Kelly were recognized for the Travis “TJ” Good Memorial Scholarship. The award honors late civil engineering senior TJ Good, who died from bacterial meningitis only weeks before graduation in spring 2010. His father, Larry Good, spoke at the April 12 banquet in his memory.
Civil engineering sophomore Brady Lawler was recognized for the Darlene and Melvin Larsen Scholarship. Along with a sophomore standing, financial need and academic merit, Lawler demonstrated leadership skills as the social chair for ASCE student club. Melvin Larsen (BSCE’46, MSCE’62) presented.
On April 20, the Iowa State chapter of Associated General Contractors (AGC) and the construction engineering (ConE) program recognized several faculty members, students and industry partners.
Lecturer Larry Cormicle was named an Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Outstanding Educator, an international honor.
ConE senior Kathryn Kern, to her surprise, received the W.A. Klinger Award. This award honors a graduating ConE senior who has “best exemplified the qualities of scholarship and service, preparing herself for a career in professional construction.”
CE senior Krista Morris was recognized for her Design-Build Institute of America Student Leadership Award, National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) for their national fifth place finish in the 2011 NECA Green Energy Challenge, AGC for their 2011 U.S.’s Outstanding Student Chapter, and students winning all four divisions of the 2011 ASC Region IV Competition.
Two gentlemen who helped develop Iowa State ConE curriculum were named to the Construction Engineering Hall of Fame. Jack Gethmann and his late father, Ken Gethmann, were honored for their engineering expertise, service to construction in Iowa, and roles in developing today’s Iowa State ConE program. Ken lobbied Master Builders of Iowa support for an Iowa State ConE program and helped choose Tom Jellinger as the inaugural program head in 1960. Jack was the first Iowa State ConE graduate in 1963, and thereafter was instrumental in developing ConE courses while working at his father’s company, Gethmann Construction Company. Jack retired as president of Gethmann Construction Company in 2007. Ken died in 1992.
Construction engineering graduates will be honored at a senior dinner May 1 at the Stage Door Lounge in the Scheman Building. A dinner for graduating civil engineering seniors was held April 25 at the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center.
