Herrera’s first project out of college (civil engineering ‘16) was no small feat. Starting as a project engineer at The Weitz Company and now as a project manager, Herrera has been turning ideas into impacts for over seven years. And her favorite part? Seeing it all come together and work.
Iowa State University’s Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering researchers are leading two of five new projects announced by BioMADE to advance the United States bioeconomy and biomanufacturing goals. These projects were funded through a special BioMADE Project Call on advancing bioreactor design and development thanks to support from Schmidt Futures. They aim to use innovative technologies in bioreactor hardware, software, sensors, modeling, and automation to produce biobased products more efficiently at a commercial scale.
Nigel Reuel and two of his doctoral students – Yee Chan and Sakib Ferdous – are developing advanced tools for cell manufacturing that could improve the cost and availability of therapeutic cells capable of fighting diseases such as cancers, heart disease, lupus and other autoimmune diseases.

Nicholas Oldham, sophomore in materials engineering, was one of four Iowa State students to be chosen for the prestigious Barry Goldwater Scholarship, which is the premier undergraduate scholarship in mathematics, natural sciences and engineering in the U.S.
Stuart Pearson is a senior in electrical engineering and concurrent grad student, a peer mentor in Electrical, Computer and Software Engineers as Leaders (ECSEL) and a teaching assistant for EE 201 and EE 351. This summer Pearson will be interning for SpaceX’s Starship program and then returning to Iowa State this fall finish his master’s degree in electrical engineering.

Cyclone Engineers lead a state-wide effort to make Iowa a leader in advanced biomanufacturing. Researchers will use microbes and other biological systems to produce plastics for 3D printing, fibers for flexible and rigid materials and proteins for medical diagnostics and therapeutics.
The ISU Foundation’s Campanile Award was bestowed upon the Therkildsens for their extraordinary, long-time support and inspiring impact on Iowa State University. In September, their $42 million lead gift for the new industrial engineering facility was the largest gift for an academic building in Iowa State University history.
The sixth annual Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship college-by-college pitch off was held in March, and two Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) students won first place in the College of Engineering’s “new idea” competition.
