“My professors and classmates have given me something to look forward to every single day – just by being themselves. There’s no way to quantify the impact I have had on the people around me, but if it’s anywhere close to how they have influenced me, then that is something that I am very proud of.”

Major: Materials engineering

Hometown: Omaha

Clubs and activities: Iowa State Women’s Soccer, Biochemistry tutor, Volunteering for Suncrest Hospice, Miracle League of Ames, Open Door Mission and Women’s Center for Advancement in Omaha.

Valuable hands-on learning experience: Playing soccer at Iowa State has been an extremely unique experience that has taught me resiliency, adaptability, work ethic and how to embrace your role in a team setting. It has also exposed me to a lot of different types of leadership that I was able to learn from and implement in other parts of my life.

Besides soccer, the diversity in engineering has exposed me to people with all sorts of strengths and outlooks on life. Working with others towards a common goal, whether it’s to solve a homework problem or win a game, has taught me that everyone has their own unique contributions that are all equally important, shaping me into a better leader.

Cyclone Engineering community: Someone once told me that we are a compilation of all the people we have come across in our lives. Big or small, you have been impacted in some way by everyone you have known. This has been extremely evident in my experience with engineering. Seeing other materials engineering majors every day got me through some challenging times in the past four years. The people in the department have made me feel at home. My professors and classmates have given me something to look forward to every single day – just by being themselves. There’s no way to quantify the impact I have had on the people around me, but if it’s anywhere close to how they have influenced me, then that is something that I am very proud of.

Making my mark on the world: I just want to have a positive impact in any way that I can. I want to use my strengths as a person and a leader to help others overcome challenges in their lives and become the individuals that they want to be.

Engineering like a Cyclone Engineer: As an Iowa State engineer, you are part of a family. The support system created by faculty and staff is like no other, and the friends and mentors you will meet along your journey are some you will have for life. While the curriculum is amazing, it’s the people that make Cyclone Engineering so special.
