Nicole Hashemi, associate professor of mechanical engineering, has been named a senior member of the National Academy of Inventors.
The honor recognizes the nation’s top emerging leaders in turning innovative discoveries into new technologies and products. Senior members are also educating and mentoring the next generation of inventors.
Only 162 inventors were named to the 2025 NAI senior member class, which will be celebrated during at NAI’s annual conference in June.
Hashemi is an international leader in the field of bioinspired materials processing. This approach represents a paradigm shift from current methods of manufacturing microstructures, offering a versatile process with precise material formulations and processing parameters.
She is the recipient of the 2023 NSF Mid-CAREER Advancement Award for her organ-on-a-chip project. She has also been the recipient of the NSF EAPSI Fellowship, National Research Council (NRC) Postdoctoral Fellowship, NRL NRC/ASEE (American Society for Engineering Education) Research Publication Award, Big 12 Faculty Fellowship Award, and Iowa State University Early Career Engineering Faculty Research Award.
In addition, Hashemi has been selected as both the National Academy of Engineering U.S. Frontiers of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences Kavli Frontiers of Science. She is also a member of the leadership team for Iowa State’s Center for Multiphase Flow Research and Education.
She is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Hashemi is an associate editor of npj Women’s Health and ASME Journal of Biomechanical Engineering.
Hashemi received a PhD in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech and a BS in mechanical engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology.
