Valuable hands-on learning in class
For my final project in ABE 4040 (Instrumentation), I worked with a group to develop an egg analysis prototype. We wired various sensors to input specific data about the egg’s quality (color, temperature, size, etc.). Incorporating and implementing all the information we learned throughout the semester was fun.
Valuable out-of-the-classroom experience
I had a few cool internships throughout college, but my greatest experience was this past summer at a study abroad program in Costa Rica. There, I learned about the dynamics and interactions in the sustainability of chocolate and coffee farming. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn about different farming methods, as well as to work and interact with a variety of people from different backgrounds.
Most influential mentor
Dr. Kurt Rosentrater has always been extremely knowledgeable about the food industry and how I, as an engineer, can make a positive difference in it. Additionally, he always challenges me to think outside the box in his classes and encourages us to consider the importance of who is impacted by our decisions/choices as engineers.
Best memory/greatest accomplishment
My favorite memory happened at the end of last semester when my classmates and I decided to host an end-of-the-year potluck/rewards show in Sukup Hall to say goodbye to the graduating seniors.
Plans after graduation
I will be working at Rembrandt Foods, an egg processing company, as a part of their Operations Management Trainee Program.
Making my mark on the world
As an engineer, I want to play an integral role in the processing, production, quality, and distribution of the American food system. I want to work with companies to continue to produce healthy and delicious foods that also support our hard-working farmers.
Engineering like a Cyclone Engineer
When I think of Cyclone Engineering, I think of innovative, hard-working students who want to continue asking questions about what we can do to improve the world. Additionally, I think one of the best experiences I’ve had as a Cyclone Engineer is that it has not been a one-person journey. I have had great experiences with helpful professors who are passionate and want you to succeed, as well as fellow students/classmates who have been supportive in homework help, exam prep, etc. It has been cool to be a part of a community that supports each other’s success!
What I’d tell my younger self about Iowa State
I would tell myself that attending Iowa State will equip me with the knowledge and skills to be a successful engineer. It will also set me apart as an engineer who can work collaboratively, think differently, drive innovation, and many more skills that cannot be taught in a textbook.
Most inspiring location on campus
Sukup Hall is my department’s building and it is where my passion for the food industry and engineering has developed in my time at college. It is also where I have been able to make the most connections with my advisors, professors, and peers, which has been one of the best parts of my college career.
