After transferring to Iowa State, Nick Tader found a passion and declared materials engineering as his major.
Rudy Herrmann (’73 indust engr), Scott Carver (’98 PhD chem engr), David Meline (’80 mech engr), Alan Naumann (’82 comp engr), and Ann Gilman (’11 chem engr) have been recognized with the College of Engineering’s top alumni awards.
Software Engineering’s Allison Arnold helps incoming transfer students find their place as Cyclone Engineers just like she did.
Elizabeth (Belling) Krigbaum (B.S. ’22, industrial engineering) knew she wanted to transfer to study industrial engineering (IE) at Iowa State after attending Des Moines Area Community College.
“When the industrial engineering major was presented, it was like a light bulb went off in my head. To me, it was and has been the perfect fit for my interests and skills,” says Krigbaum, “My time at ISU was hands down my favorite years of school.”

An Iowa State engineer is leading development of cybersecurity tools to guard power grids that carry renewable energy resources such as such as wind or solar farms. The researchers will develop “zero-trust” tools to reduce cyber exposure. The U.S. Department of Energy is supporting the project.
It was an afternoon of celebration and remembrance when the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering inducted the third class into the ECpE Hall of Fame.
Teaching Excellence (TEX) and Research Excellence (REX) Awards for summer 2024 have been presented to four Department of Aerospace Engineering graduate students.
Associate Professor Alice Alipour is leading a transdisciplinary team for power infrastructure recovery in natural disasters. After the 2020 derecho, she started working directly with communities and local power plants to address the challenge of preparation and prevention of failure in the future.
The Iowa Cyber Hub is bringing Iowa high school students to the Iowa State University campus for a Youth Cyber Summit. They’ll meet, learn about cybersecurity, and maybe do some “adversarial thinking.” It’s part of a Cybersecurity Ambassador Program established a year ago to train and post “a legion of cyber guardians” around the state to help improve hometown cybersecurity for Iowans.
Three Cyclone Engineering teams are working to bridge the gap between the lab and the large-scale use of bioreactors to manufacture bio-based products.
Sougata Roy and his DREAM-TEAM collaborators are studying 3D printing as an alternative way to process tungsten for use as shields and other components in nuclear reactors. The project is supported by a new, $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
Mechanical engineering doctoral students Sarah Tyree and Madeleine McMahon use a new gas chromatography machine in a lab in the Biorenewables Complex. A strategic plan award last year purchased several pieces of equipment that will expand research capabilities at the Bioeconomy Institute.
Research by Anson Marston Distinguished Professor in Engineering and Murray Harpole Chair in Engineering Valery Levitas looks at plastic strain-induced phase transformations in silicon. It has seen publication in Nature Communications.
