“Through civil engineering, I want to connect communities and help build better and safer places to live. And, I want to create tools and knowledge to help other engineers make meaningful progress in the field. Hopefully, all of this will come together to cultivate an environment that fosters growth and innovation.”
Hometown: Huxley, Iowa
Clubs and activities: American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) having served as freshman representative, treasurer and secretary, Society of Women Engineers (SWE), WiSE, Engineering Student Council (ESC), Tau Beta Pi, Chi Epsilon and undergraduate research.
Valuable hands-on learning experience: My summer internships have been my most valuable learning opportunities. They have helped me develop skills in many areas and provided me with first-hand industry experience. I have enjoyed applying my knowledge outside of the classroom through real projects.
Most influential mentor: From being my first civil engineering professor at Iowa State, to working with her the following seven semesters as a teaching assistant, to being my advisor in my final capstone course, assistant teaching professor Lauren Schwab’s passion in civil engineering has positively influenced my experience at Iowa State. Lauren has always been available to help. She has guided me in deciding what classes and clubs to participate in and often helped me navigate difficult situations.
Best memory: My greatest accomplishments and best memories at Iowa State have been the relationships I have made and the friendships I have built. I have felt valued and supported in all aspects of my time at Iowa State.
Plans for after graduation: I will be working full-time with AECOM doing structural engineering in Des Moines, Iowa. Eventually, I would like to get my master’s degree in structural engineering.
Making my mark on the world: Through civil engineering, I want to connect communities and help build better and safer places to live. And, I want to create tools and knowledge to help other engineers make meaningful progress in the field. Hopefully, all of this will come together to cultivate an environment that fosters growth and innovation.
Engineering like a Cyclone Engineer: To engineer “like a Cyclone” means gaining a variety of experiences. I have been exposed to many opportunities allowing me to diversify my interests and gain confidence in my future as an engineer. The Iowa State engineering experience gives everyone the opportunity and freedom to build their own unique skill set.
