NASA ISS manager, AerE grad Joel Montalbano to Hall of Distinguished Alumni April 21

Department of Aerospace Engineering alumnus Joel Montalbano, director of NASA’s International Space Station (ISS) program, will return to the ISU campus for induction into the department’s Hall of Distinguished Alumni.

Aerospace Engineering panel of professionals will discuss students transitioning to the workplace

The sometimes daunting task of university students transitioning to the workplace will be in the spotlight with advice from those who have been there in the aerospace engineering field. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Iowa Section will present “Transitioning From School to the Workplace” February 24, 4 p.m., in the Alliant-Lee Liu Auditorium, Howe Hall. The event will also be live streamed via Webex.

AerE teaching, research awards honor three grad students

Three graduate students in the Department of Aerospace Engineering have been honored for their work with Teaching Excellence (TEX) and Research Excellence (REX) Awards from Iowa State University’s Graduate College. The awards are presented each fall and spring semester to graduate students who demonstrate excellence in their scientific research or their performance in teaching.

Gift from AerE alumna creates new scholarship, advancements for student programs and Spaceflight Simulation Laboratory

Aerospace engineering alumna Laura Seidensticker is giving back to the department with a generous donation in support of an Iowa State aerospace engineering undergraduate scholarship and funding for updating of the department’s neutral buoyancy tank in the Spaceflight Simulation Laboratory.

AerE undergrad Hanna Stec views Brooke Owens Fellowship as inspiration for all female students

Hanna Stec, a Department of Aerospace Engineering junior is one of 51 women selected for a 2022 Brooke Owens Fellowship. More than 1,000 applications from around the world were received for this year’s honor.

If “What I Did This Summer” essays were still a thing in school, the Department of Aerospace Engineering Spaceflight Operations Workshop would offer some great inspiration.

And while those selected for this year’s edition may or may not be writing essays about it later, it will give them something even more valuable: a new way of looking at the world and handling challenges – from an “operational” standpoint.

The application period for the two-week experience, set for August 2-14, 2022, is now open. As always, it will depart from the typical college classroom experience, to engage students in hands-on activities to learn planning, execution, and teamwork while transforming their thought processes to be more operationally centered.

AerE graduate student Thanh Phan receives Brown Fellowship

Thanh Phan, a fifth-year Ph.D. aerospace engineering student at Iowa State, has been named a Brown Graduate Fellowship recipient for 2021-22.
