Contributing to civil engineering education one scholarship at a time

Iowa State University alum Richard Gumtau had a more than five-decade career as a highway engineer which took him all over the country and even other parts of the world. Gumtau’s journey is an aspiring one though it almost ended before it even started because of the academic and financial hurdles he faced his freshman year of college. This would eventually inspire him to support students so they would not need to encounter the hardship he endured.

CoMFRE graduate student earns prestigious DoD SMART Scholarship

Justin Lajoie, a mechanical engineering graduate student working with Travis Sipple in multiphase flows, has received the Department of Defense, Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) scholarship. The scholarship fully funds his education and allows him to focus on his research.

Iowa State’s undergrad IE program ranked 20th

Iowa State University’s undergraduate program in industrial engineering is ranked 20th in the nation, according to the “Best Colleges 2022” rankings released by U.S. News and World Report. Iowa State’s IE program, which was first established at Iowa State in 1919, is one of just three programs within the College of Engineering to crack the top 25.

Lights. Instruments. Action!

The Iowa State University Cyclone Football ‘Varsity’ Marching Band is performing during the 2018 Band Extravaganza. The drumline is equipped with lights that flash different colors every time they hit their drums and the crowd goes wild over the spectacle. This is when Jacob Schmieder, a trumpet player in the band, came up with a business idea.

Emily Johnson: From Cyclone Engineering Ph.D. to Notre Dame faculty

Emily Johnson completed her Ph.D. in mechanical engineering and wind energy science, engineering, and policy this summer. It’s a CYstarters summer

Eight Cyclone Engineers are involved in the Iowa State Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship CyStarters program this summer, pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams. The engineering innovators, including undergraduates, grad students and recent graduates, will be completing an 11-week program consisting of skill development, mentorship, and funding, to build their innovative businesses. 

Two honored with CBE’s Burkhart senior award

Alex Kauffmann and James Trettin are co-recipients of the Lawrence E. Burkhart Memrorial Award for the spring 2021 commencement. The honor is bestowed upon graduating seniors, who are named Outstanding Senior Student in Chemical Engineering, with emphasis on scholastic performance.
