CyMath builds math confidence for Ames students, valuable skills for mentors

For Namrata Vaswani, the Joseph and Elizabeth Anderlik Professor in Engineering, improving college students’ success in STEM fields starts long before freshman year.

That’s why the electrical and computer engineering professor founded CyMath, a free tutoring program, in 2020 to serve Ames-area third- through eighth-grade students who need some support in the subject. The goal is to address any gaps in math learning while those gaps are small, preparing students to build on that knowledge for success in high school and college academics — and a career in STEM.

“We aim to get students excited about mathematics and proficient with the curriculum to ensure they are prepared to pursue and thrive in math-intensive majors and degrees in college,” Vaswani says.

Since its founding, more than 70 students have been tutored, and more than 90 Iowa State tutors and faculty members have been involved.

The program has resulted in higher grades and increased confidence for students, but the benefits don’t stop there. Vaswani also touts the program’s many benefits for its mentors.

Tutors share that the program is rewarding; it helps them to explain ideas in simple and engaging ways; and it strengthens their foundational understanding and improves their communication skills.

“CyMath mentors join a community of other math-loving students through this program,” Vaswani says. “They gain valuable teaching skills, soft skills and volunteer experience, as well as improved wellbeing and connectedness.”

Seonghun Son, a PhD student in computer engineering, volunteered as a tutor for three years with CyMath. In addition to helping build students’ confidence in the subject matter, he said the program benefitted him both personally and professionally — boosting his communication, presentation and teaching skills, while growing his professional network.

“This tutoring experience has become a standout on my resume and opened doors in research and teaching,” says Son.

Program leaders are hoping to expand CyMath’s impact. Those interested in volunteering or participating can find more information on the CyMath web page. Donors can support CyMath through the Iowa State University Foundation.
