The Iowa State University Student Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) will compete in the Electrical Contracting Innovation Challenge (ECIC), a competition hosted by ELECTRI International and NECA that brings university teams from across the country together to tackle a real-world electrical construction challenge. NECA is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2026, and this year’s competition features an intense scope built around a high-tech university medical innovation center.

The seven-student team of undergraduates from the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering (CCEE), acts as electrical contractor “Cardinal Electric” for the competition. This year’s challenge asks students to develop a full-service client proposal package that includes a detailed electrical estimate, drawing set and schedule, giving them a look at how professional electrical contractors approach major projects. The team is guided by faculty advisor Richard G. Schultze and Suzanne M. Schultze Teaching Fellow Jenny Baker and supported by the Iowa Chapter NECA.

While developing their proposal, the team has connected with NECA contractors and other industry professionals through tours and discussions that bring the competition to life beyond the classroom and give students a better understanding of the industry. Cardinal Electric’s final proposal will be submitted in spring 2026 and reviewed by electrical industry professionals from across the country. Finalists will advance to present at the NECA Convention in Las Vegas this fall. Through ECIC, Iowa State students continue to strengthen their electrical skills, build professional connections, and represent CCEE on a national stage.
