For industrial engineering senior Olivia Andersen, a central Iowa community college was the “perfect starting place” after high school. She then attended an Iowa State career fair and secured an internship even before transferring here in the fall of 2024.
“During my campus tour, I could feel the sense of community, and when I met a few of the professors, I knew this was the place that would help me grow into my best self. Iowa State gives students so many ways to explore their potential, from the Student Innovation Center and the Pappajohn pitch competitions to the countless clubs and organizations that encourage creativity and collaboration. I have been so impressed by how much of what I learn in the classroom connects directly to industry and by how every teacher, advisor, and classmate genuinely wants to see you succeed.”
“One of my favorite memories was a late-night group project in my Excel coding class. It was close to midnight, and my group was still working hard to finish the assignment. Even though we were exhausted, it was one of the first times at Iowa State I felt truly connected to a group of classmates. That teamwork and sense of belonging reminded me that I was exactly where I was meant to be, and now many of those classmates are some of my best friends.”
“During my first semester, I had a moment that really showed me what the Iowa State community is all about. I was overwhelmed trying to keep up with coursework and not understanding my coding class, so I went to my professor’s office in tears. She spent over an hour walking me through every line of code until it finally clicked.
I visited her office a few more times, and each time I left feeling stronger and more capable. That experience inspired me to become a teaching assistant for that same Excel coding class so I can help other students who might feel the same way I once did. It taught me that everyone here wants to see you succeed, and you just have to open yourself to opportunities and believe that you can too.
I have also been fortunate to have amazing transfer peer mentors, Nora and Olivia, who helped me get involved, build a LinkedIn profile, prepare for interviews, and stay organized. Their support made my transition so much smoother and helped me find my place here.”
“Industrial engineering is a great career choice for me as I have always loved working with people, problem solving, optimization, and the manufacturing process. The career opportunities can take you anywhere, such as amusement parks, airports, food distribution centers, technology companies like Google, and so many other industries. I love that versatility and the way it allows you to make an impact wherever you go.”
“Iowa State has challenged me, but it has also given me the support I needed to thrive. When I think back on my educational journey, it has been one of growth, discovery, and learning to believe in myself. Transferring to Iowa State was an adjustment and a challenge that I am so grateful I made.”
