College of Engineering News • Iowa State University

Welcoming Patrick Johnson, professor of materials science and engineering

Education: PhD, Chemical Engineering, Columbia University, 2005, ME, Biomedical Engineering, University of Virginia, 1994, BS, Chemical Engineering, Lehigh University

Research focus: New materials and technologies to address critical issues in disease detection, composite materials, and energy storage applications. We are interested in developing techniques to accelerate the discovery and optimization of these materials through autonomous experimentation in conjunction with machine learning approaches.

Joins Iowa State from: Professor and head position, Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, University of Wyoming

How do you hope your research discoveries impact the world? We hope that our work helps advance materials discovery with impact on the implementation of rapid, portable medical diagnostics as well as renewable energy applications.

What kind of classroom and teaching experience do you look forward to creating at IowState? I’m excited to share my experience in developing new materials for biomedical, space, and energy applications with the students at Iowa State. I’m looking forward to working with students to create an inclusive learning environment, enabling us to grow as engineers and scientists together.

What are you most excited for as you join Iowa State? am excited to join university with both strong focuon student success and a rich, collaborative research culture.
