The College of Engineering Dean’s Leadership Award recognizes outstanding undergraduate juniors and seniors who show exemplary leadership outside of a single department or organization. Madison Drent, junior in materials engineering, and Rachel Schmerbach, senior in aerospace engineering, are this year’s recipients.

Each semester 12 outstanding seniors are selected, one for each major in the College of Engineering. One outstanding senior is named student marshal, representing the college at commencement.
A team led by Iowa State University’s Michael Bartlett has created a new composite, called a liquid metal programmed elastomer (LMPE), where liquid metal can be loaded up to 70% in precise, programmable patterns throughout the material.
