Fresh off the assembly line: Power Pullers set to compete with newly built tractor

An ISU ABE student organization that spent the school year designing and building a quarter-scale tractor will enter a lean and versatile machine into a competition in an effort to climb the leader board after a strong showing last year.

Three engineering postdocs win research and seed funding awards

Three Cyclone Engineer postdoctoral research associates won research awards and funding from the Iowa State University PostDoc Association. Azahar Ali, postdoc in electrical and computer engineering, won a Postdoctoral Scholar Research Excellence Award. Timothy Morgan, postdoc in mechanical engineering, and Fei Lu, postdoc in materials science and engineering, both have won Postdoctoral Seed Grant funding support.

Chris Rehmann, associate professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering, received an Iowa State University Alumni Association Faculty-Staff Inspiration Award, which honors faculty or staff that have had a significant influence in the lives of Iowa State students.

ME professor awarded patent for lignin conversion process

Mechanical Engineering Assistant Professor Xianglan Bai has been awarded a patent for a process she has developed to convert lignin into precursors of biofuels and chemicals. U.S. Patent 10,190,053, entitled “Pyrolysis of Lignin,” is one of the products of her research group in developing biobased chemicals and fuels. CIRAS’ Joy Donald to receive Outstanding New Professional Award

Joy Donald, industrial specialist at the Center for Industrial Research and Service, will receive an Iowa State University Professional and Scientific Outstanding New Professional Award at the university award ceremony on Sept. 23. The award recognizes Iowa State staff members who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments unusually early in their professional career.

Is there a future leader in the house? Perspectives from design and construction students

While it might sound cliché, it’s also true. The future of our industry will be defined by young people in college and apprenticeships today. What do they expect from and will contribute to a career in the architecture, engineering and construction industry? We put those questions, and many more, to members of the National Design-Build Student Championship team from Iowa State. They provide some interesting insights into future generations of design-builders and also offer advice for student teams considering competing in this year’s DBIA National Design-Build Student Competition.
