Kortney Wagner, a senior in biological systems engineering, was awarded the Schafer Educational Scholarship. Wagner also belongs to Tau Beta Pi.

The Schafer Educational Trust (SET) was established in 1999 by agricultural engineering & engineering mechanics alum, Bob Schafer, to honor his late mother, Pansy Head Schafer, father, Marion L. Schafer, and brother, David L. Schafer.

Cash awards are made on an ad hoc basis to qualifying students from Louisa County, Iowa who attend Iowa State University to study engineering.

Bob Schafer says the impetus for establishing the SET was to do something lasting for Louisa County and especially for the Wapello community which has been important to the Schafers since the early 1800’s.

“Wapello Community schools well prepared me for studying agricultural engineering at Iowa State University. I am very thankful for the undergraduate training I had in the Agricultural and Biological Engineer Department and the graduate training I had in the Agricultural and Biological Engineer Department and the Engineering Mechanics Department at Iowa State University which provided me with the background of an incredible career in engineering research. The Schafer Educational Trust is also a way of saying thank you to Iowa State University.”

Schafer retired after a career at the USDA National Soil Dynamics Lab in Auburn, Alabama.

Past ABE alumni recipients of the SET include Caleb Bashore (BS, 2012) and Jeremy Davis (PhD, 2007).
