Former students of Richard Handy, emeritus professor of civil engineering at Iowa State University, created an endowed faculty position in honor of their mentor. On November 4, several of these students, along with friends and family, attended a medallion ceremony that celebrated White’s contributions to civil engineering.

White received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1997. He then came to Iowa

State to earn his master’s degree in civil engineering with a co-emphasis in geotechnical engineering and civil engineering materials in 1999. He finished his PhD in just three semesters, and then joined the Iowa State faculty in 2001.

On November 18, Mickelson received a medallion for his position, which was established to retain and recognize an outstanding faculty member with research and teaching emphasis in the areas of sustainability, clean water and the environment.

Mickelson earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in agricultural engineering at Iowa State in 1982, 1984, and 1991. He joined Iowa State as a faculty member in the College of Engineering in 1982 and joined the agricultural and biosystems engineering (ABE) department in 1997. He is currently the ABE department chair.

Both ceremonies featured remarks from the medallion recipients, President Gregory Geoffroy, and Dean Jonathan Wickert.
