Heindel named interim chair of mechanical engineering

Ted Heindel, professor and associate chair for academic affairs for the Department of Mechanical Engineering, will serve as interim chair, effective July 1. Heindel succeeds Jonathan Wickert, who was appointed dean of Iowa State’s College of Engineering.

Heindel is the director of the Experimental Multiphase Flow Laboratory. He was recently awarded the Bergles professorship and has been twice selected by graduating seniors as mechanical engineering’s Professor of the Year.

Prior to joining Iowa State in fall 2000, Heindel was an assistant professor of engineering at the Institute of Paper Science and Technology (Atlanta, Georgia) from 1994 to 2000. He received his bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1988 and master’s (1990) and doctoral (1994) degrees in mechanical engineering from Purdue University.

His appointment as interim chair will continue until the next permanent chair is in place. An open search for that position will begin this fall.
