Oldest Iowan, former Iowa State engineering secretary dies at 110

Verna Webber death
Verna Webber, 1903-2013

The following is an excerpt from a Dec. 11, 2013, Ames Tribune story:

Verna Webber, of Ames, was a part of an exclusive group of people: the super-centenarians, which is comprised of those who live to be at least 110.

Webber, Iowa’s oldest living resident, died on Sunday (Dec. 8, 2013) at the age of 110.

Verna was a stenographer for the Iowa State chemical engineering department from 1922 to 1924. She was the wife of Dr. Henry Webber, who taught electrochemistry and was professor-in-charge of the chemical engineering unit operations laboratory from 1941 to 1961 and professor from 1923 to 1961. Henry died of a stroke in 1965.

Pictured is Verna at her 110th birthday party Feb. 27, 2013, at Riverside Manor in Ames, Iowa.
