College of Engineering ranks among nation’s leading online education graduate programs

Iowa State University’s College of Engineering has been recognized as one of the nation’s leading providers of online graduate education by U.S. News & World Report.

Iowa State’s program ranked 18th in the area of Teaching Practices & Student Engagement, and 30th in the area of Student Services & Technology.

Additionally, the college’s master’s programs in computer engineering and information assurance ranked 8th for Faculty Credentials and Training, 9th for Student Engagement & Accreditation, and 13th for Student Services and Technology.

The U.S. News 2012 Top Online Education Program Rankings for Graduate Programs in Engineering were released January 10. Iowa State was the only Iowa college or university to receive a ranking in any category.

Teaching Practices & Student Engagement evaluates an online program’s ability to promote student participation, including interaction with faculty and other students, and the timeliness of instructor responses to student questions. Accreditation of the university’s corresponding undergraduate programs is also considered.

Student Services & Technology measures include the diversity of online learning technologies, flexibility of course offerings for students, access to online academic advising, and 24/7 technical support.

Faculty Credentials & Training evaluates instructors based on traditional academic credentials, as well as experience and training teaching online engineering courses.

“The majority of our online graduate students are practicing engineers, so we work hard to ensure our course offerings are relevant to their needs,” said Tom Brumm, professor-in-charge of online learning for the colleges of engineering and liberal arts and sciences. “We also reach out to Iowa companies, providing education and training to their employees to help them maintain a competitive edge.”
